This novel is set in post-war Singapore and is about freedom. On the personal front, it is the story of a young Peranakan woman who longs to be free from her over-bearing Chinese husband. On the national front, it is about the freedom of Singapore from colonial rule. The story is told by three main characters, Tan Swee Gek, the wife, Wong Kum Chong, the husband and Teng Xin Nan, the communist agitator who attempts to incite the people of Singapore against the British.
